From Trading Desk to Chats: Why USD₮ Became the Default Tokenized Dollar for Everyday Payments

From a trading instrument to a payments network of hundreds of millions of people, and why the messenger is where USD₮ is heading now.
Choosing the right stablecoin for in-chat payments is more important than it seems. These transfers are usually small, frequent, and personal, so the recipient needs to trust the token they receive. USD₮ is the largest, most liquid, and most widely held tokenized dollar, used by over 534 million people worldwide (Tether Q4 2025 Market Report).
This article explains how USD₮ evolved, and why messaging apps like EXTRA SAFE and LINE now use it as a standard for stablecoin payments.
What USD₮ Actually Is Now
Traders initially used USD₮ to preserve the stability of their funds between transactions without relying on banks. By 2025, it had become a way for everyday people to move money and get paid.
The numbers show how big this has become. In 2025, stablecoins moved a record $33 trillion, with USD₮ making up about $13.3 trillion of that on-chain (Bloomberg, Jan 2026). But for chat payments, the size of each transfer matters more than the total. Most on-chain USD₮ transactions are under $1,000 (Tether Q4 2025 Market Report). These are from ordinary people sending small amounts to each other regularly.
This change, from a tool for traders to money people use every day, is what makes USD₮ right for chat payments. But it only works if enough people already have it.
The Tokenized Dollar, Which 534 Million People Already Hold
The money you send only matters if the person receiving it knows what it is and can use it freely. This is where USD₮ stands out, because no other stablecoin has its reach.
By the close of 2025, USD₮ hit a record $187.3 billion market cap and an estimated 534.5 million users worldwide — the eighth straight quarter adding more than 30 million users (CoinMarketCap, Feb 2026). On-chain, USD₮ wallets account for 70.7% of all stablecoin wallets, and monthly active on-chain users reached an all-time high of 24.8 million (Tether Q4 2025 Market Report).
Proven Through Every Storm
A tokenized dollar needs to keep its value, especially when markets are unstable. USD₮ has been tested many times in public and has held its value.
It absorbed the collapse of TerraUST in 2022 and FTX's failure later that year. In March 2023, when a competing stablecoin broke its peg during the Silicon Valley Bank crisis, USD₮ traded at a premium as people moved toward it (Spark, Stablecoin Depegging History). The most recent test came in October 2025: a liquidation cascade erased more than a third of total crypto market value, yet USD₮ grew 3.5% while the second- and third-largest stablecoins fell 2.6% and 57% (Cointelegraph, Feb 2026). Behind that resilience sits a reserve that closed the quarter at $192.9 billion, ahead of liabilities (Tether Q4 2025 Market Report).
For chat payments, this track record matters. The dollar you send in a conversation should be the one that keeps its value when others do not.
Everywhere the User Is
USD₮ is available on all major blockchains, including Ethereum, Tron, Avalanche, Polygon, BNB Chain, Solana, and the main L2-s, with deep liquidity on each (Tether Q4 2025 Market Report). This multi-chain presence means one balance can reach anyone, no matter where they keep their dollars.
This wide reach is important for wallets. For example, EXTRA SAFE lets someone send USD₮ on one network, and the recipient gets it on another, with cross-chain routing handled in the background. Deep liquidity on each chain makes these transfers fast and affordable. It also means the network fee can be paid in USD₮, so one balance covers both the transfer and its fee.
This experience is possible because of the underlying infrastructure. We have explained in another post how a stablecoin can pay its own gas in EXTRA SAFE.
India is a good example of why liquidity matters. It has the world's largest inbound remittance corridor, at $135 billion a year (India Today, June, 2025), and is the top country for crypto adoption (Chainalysis, 2025). When a tokenized dollar is this liquid across many networks, it can move from someone sending money abroad to their family at home, no matter which wallets or chains they use.
Tether Is Building Toward the Payments Inside the Chats
Nowadays, the world's largest stablecoin issuer is moving toward payments built into chat apps.
In May 2025, Tether launched USD₮ on LINE, a messaging app with 196 million monthly active users across Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. This lets people send and receive USD₮ directly in the app's wallet (Tether, May 2025; CCN). Tether's strategy goes further, offering an open Wallet Development Kit so anyone can build a self-custodial wallet, and aiming for dollars to move through everyday apps instead of dedicated crypto tools (Bankless interview with CEO Paolo Ardoino, 2025).

In June 2026, EXTRA SAFE launched beta access to exactly this kind of product: a messenger with a self-custodial, stablecoin-first wallet. Messaging apps with built-in money features are already here. This is the direction the issuer of the world's most widely used tokenized dollar is moving.
What Makes USD₮ a Strong Choice for In-Chat Payments
USD₮ is a great fit for chat payments for these reasons:
1.
It has the deepest liquidity and widest availability. USD₮ is the easiest stablecoin to get, hold, and spend in most places.
2.
There is a network effect with 534 million users. When someone receives USD₮, they already know what it is.
3.
Its value has held steady through every major shock since 2022. USD₮ remained stable amid events such as the TerraUST and FTX collapses and the October 2025 market crash.
4.
USD₮ is available on every major network. This means one balance can reach anyone, no matter where they keep their stablecoins.
All these factors make USD₮ ready to use as soon as it arrives in a chat.

Where the Tokenized Dollar Goes Next
The new way to send money is already here. When you send money in a chat, you want the other person to recognize it and know they can use it. It comes down to trust and usability, and USD₮ does both better than any other option.
Money now moves as easily as messages do. The dollar that moves with it should be the one most people already have.
The EXTRA SAFE closed beta is open now, and full production will launch in July 2026.
