Server-based, account-linked
Most calls are routed through Google’s servers via the SFU model and encrypted in transit. Some 1-to-1 “legacy” calls may connect peer-to-peer. If P2P is not possible, the media is relayed via Google servers, which forward encrypted streams. Time limit features vary by plan.

Encryption & Security

Asymmetric E2EE protects all communication: messaging, file transfer, calls. Private keys stay on users’ devices, and public keys secure every session. Servers don’t have access to content or critical metadata, and nothing is retained: chats auto-clear on your timer, and in-call messages disappear the moment the session ends.
Full encryption depends on setup, account type, and call method
Encrypts data in transit using standard protocols (DTLS/SRTP) and encrypts recordings at rest. Phone dial-in audio may not be encrypted. Workspace users can enable Client-Side Encryption (CSE), which encrypts media on the device using organization-controlled keys.
