What are Private Balances, and how do they work?
Private Balances keep how much you hold and how much you send hidden from anyone looking at the blockchain, while every balance stays verifiable.
You wouldn't show the whole restaurant your bank statement just to split the bill. On most blockchains, that's exactly what happens: a stablecoin transfer sits on a public ledger forever, with the amount, the addresses, and your balance visible to anyone who looks.
How it works
Private Balances are built on eERC, Avalanche's encrypted token standard. It uses zero-knowledge proofs to keep amounts hidden, both when you send and while funds simply sit in your wallet. eERC makes balances and payments private, while staying provable for anyone entitled to check.
What's private and what stays visible | On a regular transfer | With Private Balances |
|---|---|---|
Who you pay | Visible on-chain | With Private BalancesVisible on-chain |
Transfer amount | Visible on-chain | Private |
Your balance | Visible on-chain | Private |
Time of the transfer | Visible on-chain | Visible on-chain |
Who you're paying still shows on-chain. How much – never does.
How to use Private Balances
1.
Open the Wallet tab and select the Avalanche network.
2.
Choose a stablecoin and convert it to its private version, right in your Assets.
3.
Your private balance appears under Private Balances, shown with asterisks.
4.
To see the amount, tap the eye icon and confirm with biometrics. It hides again afterward.
5.
Send from your private balance the same way you would for any transfer.
You can convert your private balance back to a regular one at any time.
Where it works
Private Balances are available on the Avalanche network first, for stablecoins and AVAX, Avalanche's native coin.
Converting and sending use the same transparent fee model as any transfer: the full breakdown appears before you confirm.
Can the person I pay see the amount?
Yes. The recipient sees the amount in the chat and in their wallet. The amount is hidden from the public, not from the people in the transfer.
Who can verify a private balance?
Every balance stays provable for anyone entitled to check, such as an auditor you choose to share it with.
Does this hide who I pay?
Private Balances hide amounts, not people. Who you pay stays on-chain like any other transfer, and every balance stays provable — privacy from the public, with accountability built in.
